What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot created by OpenAI and launched in November 2022. OpenAI is an AI research and deployment company that was founded in 2015. They have also created other products like Dall-e and Whisper. ChatGPT is designed to enable users to communicate with machines in a way that is similar to how they would communicate with humans. OpenAI introduced ChatGPT as “a model which interacts in a conversational way. The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests.” 

ChatGPT is free to use and can be accessed here. There is a subscription option for $20/month which comes with perks like “available even when demand is high, faster response speed, priority access to new features and the latest version of ChatGPT, known as GPT-4. 

What is Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT)?

The Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) is an AI model that has been pre-trained and has the ability to generate text. The transformer model was created by Google Brain in 2007 and was released as open-source software. Subsequently, OpenAI adapted this transformer-based approach to creating GPT, which later served as the foundation for the development of ChatGPT in November 2022.

What can be ChatGPT used for?

ChatGPT is a versatile language model with a wide range of applications. It can be used for tasks such as generating human-like text, translating languages, assisting with coding, creating resumes and cover letters, explaining complex topics, generating jokes, summarizing ideas and concepts, and asking philosophical questions, among others.

ChatGPT can be integrated with a variety of apps and tools, including Google Sheets and Docs. By integrating with these platforms, ChatGPT can help users generate text, summarize content, and provide language translations directly within the document or spreadsheet. Notwithstanding that ChatGPT is a very powerful AI model, it is crucial to provide clever prompts for properly leveraging ChatGPt to its full potential. The proficiency with which the prompts are constructed determines the quality of the results you get. With well-crafted prompts, ChatGPT can deliver more accurate and tailored responses, making it a powerful tool for information retrieval, creative writing, problem-solving, and much more. The careful use of prompts empowers users to leverage the vast knowledge and language generation capabilities of ChatGPT, opening up a world of possibilities for enhancing productivity, creativity, and engagement.

  • Your contribution – specify what you would be providing – content, URL, video link etc.
  • Your Expectation – specify what do you expect from the results – translation, analysis, summary, poetry etc.

Limitations of ChatGPT

Factually incorrect answers:
ChatGPT cannot verify facts and the accuracy of the information it generates. Therefore, users should cross-verify information from reliable sources, especially in domains where factual accuracy is crucial, such as medical or legal advice.

Response variability based on the input:
The model relies on statistical patterns in the training data which makes it highly sensitive to the wording of the input. The users must be very careful in crafting their queries to generate the desired output, often requiring trial and error.

Limited contextual comprehension:
ChatGPT processes text in chunks, thereby limiting its ability to develop a comprehensive understanding of the broader context. As a result, it might provide irrelevant or nonsensical answers.

Inappropriate or offensive content:
The responses generated by ChatGPT can be influenced by biases within the training data it has been exposed to. Furthermore, ChatGPT can even generate inappropriate or offensive content when prompted with malicious or harmful inputs. Therefore content moderation is highly important and a significant challenge for AI systems like ChatGPT. 

Researchers and developers are actively working to overcome these challenges and enhance their capabilities. As the field progresses, we can expect improvements in addressing these limitations. 

How does ChatGPT affect search engines like Google and Bing?

Google is the world’s most popular search engine with a market share of over 92%. It is so popular that people use the term “Google” for searching on the Internet. There are very few companies that have gained such popularity that people confuse their product and brand name – one such example is Xerox. Google has dominated the search market ever since it was founded. 

In 2022, ChatGPT took the world by storm. ChaptGPT is not a search engine and comparing ChatGPT to search engines is inappropriate as it is not designed to function as one. They differ significantly in their approaches and capabilities. Search engines excel at retrieving relevant documents and web pages based on specific keywords or phrases. They utilize complex algorithms to rank and present search results from a vast index of web content. In contrast, ChatGPT engages in dynamic, conversational interactions with users, providing personalized responses and contextually relevant information. It comprehends and generates human-like text, allowing for more nuanced queries and discussions. While search engines rely on static web pages, ChatGPT taps into its pre-trained knowledge and understanding to offer real-time, interactive conversations. 

However, in February 2023, Microsoft added AI to the Bing search engine powering the same advanced technology that OpenAI used for creating ChatGPT.

In response, Google too introduced its experimental conversational AI service powered by LaMDA that they are calling BARD. 


In conclusion, ChatGPT is a powerful and versatile language model. Due to its diverse range of applications and integrations with various apps, ChatGPT has the potential to enhance users’ productivity. Advanced prompts can unlock the full potential of ChatGPT and allow it to perform remarkable tasks.

ChatGPT is not intended to operate as a search engine, and therefore, it would be unsuitable to compare it to search engines.
